Congratulations to Jerry Wu (1944), a 9th grader at Richard Montgomery High School who earned 4/4 points to become the 2014 Maryland-Sweet-16 Chess Champion. The MD-Sweet-16 Champion will receive a 4-year MD-Sweet-16 UMBC Chess Scholarship to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, valued at $39,056 in 2013-2014. There are 2 additional types of UMBC Chess Scholarships available to all scholastic residents of Maryland.)

Update to follow: Jerry T Wu from Gaithersburg, MD has won the 2014 Maryland Sweet 16 chess tournament at UMBC with a perfect 4-0 record, including a 4th round win over Sahil Sinha. Jerry is a freshman at Richard Montgomery High School in Montgomery County. With the victory, he has won a 4-year chess scholarship to UMBC. More details to follow.

The final 2014 MD Sweet 16 standings have now been released after the last scheduled MD Sweet 16 Qualifier: MCA McDuffie Memorial rescheduled for 22 Feb. The MD Sweet 16 tournament will be held next weekend as a separate section of the UMBC Open on March 1-2, 2014.
Congratulations to those on the list of the 16 qualifiers for the field is as follows pending acceptance to play!:
The top 8 qualifiers by USCF rating (03/2014) are Bendguz Offertaler, Sahil Sinha, Alexander Davydov, Jerry Wu, Ronald Best Jr, David Snyder, Pieter Heesters, and Andrew Mao.
The next 8 qualifiers by MD Sweet 16 Varsity Points are Douglas Malcolm, Nathan Janus, Phillip Wang, Ali Merchant, Zachary Jablow, Benjamin Hung, Bijan Tahmassebi, and Bradley Guo.
Any qualifier who does not intend to participate should contact MCA at tournaments@mdchess.com.
The next five alternates based on 3/2014 USCF ratings: Robert Pekarek Jr, Jeffrey Du, Quil Kibak, Jordan Best, and Justin Hung.

2013 MD Sweet 16 Standings: Final Update (2/23/2013)

Updated 23 February 2013 - The standings have now been updated with the final MCA scholastic qualifying event results. The Rally Points have been renamed to Varsity Points to reflect the change in the name of the top section in the local scholastic tournaments.
The 2012-2013 MCA scholastic season is underway, and one of the featured competitions is the Varsity section qualification to the 2013 MD Sweet 16, where 16 of the top Maryland scholastic players will compete in a separate section of the UMBC Open on March 2-3.
The Maryland Sweet 16 Champion receives a 4-year Maryland Sweet 16 Scholarship to UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County). The fixed-dollar scholarship covers tuition and fees, but not room and board (valued at $39,056 over 4 years in 2012-2013).
All participants in the 2013 MD Sweet 16 are required to play all 4 rounds over the weekend.

After the third round, the field has separated a little. We have three players tied for first with 2.5 points. Depending on the final rounds, we may end up with a playoff for first place and a chess scholarship to UMBC.
Round 4 will start at 3pm this afternoon.
